Register today for the Monarchs Leadership Conference on Friday, February 3rd from 9:30am-2pm, in Webb University Center and Online!
The Monarch Leadership Conference provides opportunities to highlight students' experiences gained in hands-on leadership practice at Old Dominion University. Sessions highlight knowledge and experience gained from leadership programs, mentorship, internships, project management, research, advocacy, and activism for community change.

The conference offers 50-minute sessions facilitated by community members, alumni, faculty, and staff who are also joined by student leaders. During the morning take advantage of free professional headshots offered by Career Development Services. Also, earn raffle tickets for each session you attend to win free prizes, including Monarch Plus! Consider bringing a canned food item for the student pantry and receive a bonus raffle ticket. The Time Management Hack with Lashay McQueen & Gina Hickman

The Time Management Hack: This session will discuss time management strategies to help with balancing academics, work, personal commitments, and involvement. Students will participate in reflection activities and use tools such as worksheets and calendars during the session to practice building skills. The session will assist students in organizing time more efficiently to help with leadership development.

Financial Management Strategies for College Students with Elizabeth Owusuwaa(ODU Alum) & Nia Griffin

This session will focus on financial management strategies for college students. We will discuss the full ecosystem of financial decisions that students usually face, from Student Loans to salary negotiation. It will be divided into three main sections, Early Stage financial Management (Mainly for freshmen and Sophomores), Foundations of Financial Management, and Wealth Building. This is a unique finance session as the focus will be on developing a unique mindset and value that naturally generates wealth and allows you to keep and grow the wealth through proper self assessment and personal management.

Elizabeth Owusuwaa is a 2X ODU Alum with a Bachelors and Masters in Accounting in 2018. During her tenure, she participated in majority of the Leadership Programs and received a certificate for the Monarch's Lead program. She is also a WIN alum and was a part of the first inauguration of WIN mentees. Elizabeth is currently a Consultant at Deloitte with a focus on Financial Management Strategy and Transformation. She is also a Certified Public Accountant and a board member of the Strome College of Business School of Accountancy, and an advisory board member of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council( Mentorship Taskforce) at the Virginia Society of CPAs.

E-Portfolios - Highlighting Your Leadership Potential through Your Online Presence with Elle Tyson & Ethan Pitts

Highlighting Your Leadership Potential through Your Online Presence How can you craft an effective online identity as a leader in your field? In this session, presenters will share strategies for constructing an effective online presence that emphasizes your leadership skills within your professional field. First, they will share models of effective online representations of leadership and professional skills. Then, students currently engaged in such efforts will share their own online representations and discuss the choices they made. Next, the presenters will guide participants through personal branding and visual design activities, helping participants actively make rhetorical decisions that can more effectively shape their online identity. Presenters will also discuss ODU resources available to support on-going personal/professional development in online spaces. The session will conclude with a question and answer period. As a result of participating in the session, participants will be able to: Articulate the value of continually developing an evolving online professional identity Identify strategies for developing a short, personal/professional philosophy Consider the impact of visual design on the effectiveness of their personal/professional branding.
Elle Tyson is the Assistant Director of ePortfolio and Digital initiatives Support and a PhD student in English at Old Dominion University. She studies identity construction in ePortfolios, specifically focused on viewers' first impressions of these websites and decisions students are making when creating them.

Ethan Pitts is a junior pursuing an English degree. Upon graduation, he plans to become a professional editor. In his current role as an ePortfolio Assistant, he supports ODU students as they develop digital literacies and online identities. Angela Allen is a sophomore pursuing an Accounting degree. Upon graduation, she plans to become an accountant. In her current role as an ePortfolio Assistant, she supports ODU students as they develop digital literacies and online identities.

Building a Diverse Team with Johnny Garcia, Ph.D.(CEO)

Inspired by his parents and grandparents and dedicated to a life of service for family, community, and the technology industry, Dr. Garcia is Founder and CEO of SimIS Inc., SimIS Holdings LLC, Nimbus Health Systems, Cativa Health, Prasili LLC, Sticks Golf, Garcia ES LLC and Health Care Simulations LLC, and owner and investor in numerous other businesses.
He has become an innovation leader in the modeling and simulation, and healthcare industries. He serves area youth through his robust internship programs. His philosophy of making a difference permeates his many service activities; numerous board memberships, STEM program development and, volunteering service to local, state, and international organizations, and mentoring newly started small businesses and nonprofits.
He serves on numerous boards (President of the Hispanic Chamber, Vice Chair Hampton Roads chamber, Portsmouth Partnership, Begin Again Foundation, Chair Hampton Roads workforce council, Chair ODU College of Engineering, Chair ODU VMASC, Boys and Girls Club, Star base Victory, Communities in Schools, Portsmouth Athletic League, First Chesapeake Robotics, and many others.
Dr. Garcia served 5 years in the U.S. Navy as an enlisted operations specialist second class petty officer and worked in industry for 15 years before founding his first business SimIS Inc.
Dr. Garcia is a known leader in the community and his service is his compass. Dr. Garcia has degrees from Old Dominion University (PhD), St. Leo College (BA and BS) and the Florida Institute of Technology (MS and MBA).
He is the proud father of a wonderful set of 16-year-old twin daughters – Hope and Faith – and married to his lovely wife of 31 years, Lorena.
