Welcome to a brand new academic year at Old Dominion University! I’m Dawn Timms, your Human Services Association President & Media Manager, and I’m thrilled to kick off another season of growth, service, and connection with each of you.
This is my first time serving in this role, and I’m genuinely honored and excited to be part of such a purposeful, inspiring, and community-driven organization as HSA’s President and Media Manager.
Joining me in leadership this year are two incredible women:
• Kayla Cofield, our Vice President & Treasurer
• Latesha Holloman, our Volunteer Coordinator
Together, we’re committed to fostering a space where collaboration, inclusivity, and purpose-driven action take center stage. Whether you're studying Human Services or another major entirely—HSA is open to all ODU students who share a passion for making a difference.
We’re here to represent what you want to see on campus. That means your ideas, your voice, and your vision matter. I’ve already shared a few ideas with our advisor, and now we’d love to hear from you. What events, initiatives, or conversations would you like HSA to lead this year?
Here are a few of my ideas, and I’d love to hear back from each of you on how—or if—these events would be something our ODU students would be interested in. These Community Service & Wellness Events are designed to build visibility and trust while directly serving both our campus and the local community:
🧣 Holiday Pantry Drive & Distribution: Partner with the campus pantry and clothing closet to collect and distribute essentials before Thanksgiving or winter break.
🧘 Mental Health Pop-Up Booth: Offer stress relief kits, peer support sign-ups, and info on counseling services during midterms or finals.
🛠️ Volunteer Day with Local Nonprofits: Coordinate transportation and sign-ups for a day of service with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, food banks, or shelters.
Also, I’m currently working with our advisor and upper faculty to open more officer positions to our members. We’re looking to fill the following roles:
• 📝 Secretary – to help with meeting notes, member communications, and organizational records
• 📱 Media Manager – someone with strong social media skills to elevate HSA’s visibility and engagement beyond what I’ve been able to do alone
• 🎨 Graphic Designer – a creative mind to help us design flyers, digital posts, and promotional materials
If you’re interested in any of these positions, please feel free to reach out to me directly. As I mentioned, these roles are still in development, but your interest and input will help shape how we move forward.
For more details about our mission, structure, and values, please refer to the HSA Constitution. It’s a great resource to understand how we operate and how you can get involved.
My goal is to start working immediately to get our first event scheduled—one that truly reflects the needs and wants of ODU students. If you could respond back to me with your thoughts and ideas on the events I’ve shared—or any new ones you’d like to suggest—within the next week, that would be wonderful. This will allow me to begin collaborating with our advisor and present a clear picture of what our student body truly wants and needs.
With deep gratitude,
Dawn Timms
