Details

Quantum computing offers an exponential speedup over classical computing for certain calculations. This is largely due to the ability of quantum computers to form superpositions in their registers, allowing a single quantum chip to process multiple bases states simultaneously. However, this same property makes distributing calculations across multiple quantum chips particularly challenging. We have developed a method for approximate distributed quantum computing such that the level of approximation is controllable. When the underlying model has weak coupling across a boundary, the approximations become negligible.

Research Scientist

Naval Research Laboratory

John Stenger is a research scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory and an adjunct professor at Old Dominion University. He is a theoretical physicist focused on developing quantum algorithms. His recent work includes development of the Cascaded Variational Quantum Eigensolver, quantum computing calculations for the electronic structure of molecules and materials, and quantum computing calculations for optimization problems such as the traveling salesman problem and satellite scheduling. He received his PhD at West Virginia University where he developed simulations of topological qubits.
