About Us
The Environmental Justice Club (EJC) is a student-led organization at Old Dominion University that aims to mitigate the climate crisis with climate action by creating a safe and accessible space for the Monarch community to talk and learn more about various interlocking issues of environmental justice, such as Indigenous sovereignty, Black liberation, ecosystem preservation, reproductive healthcare access, and clean water access, among many others. In order to imagine and work towards solutions for healing our collective future, the EJC understands the importance of addressing the ongoing causes and increasingly destructive effects of climate change. Our programming and events center and uplift the voices of Black & Indigenous people of color (BIPOC)ÔÇöwho are often the most impacted by the effects of the climate crisis while also often being the most underrepresented. We do this to promote a fuller understanding of how climate change is affecting people of all walks of life, in all corners of the worldÔÇöincluding ours. We recognize that we are all at different comfort levels when it comes to discussing the climate crisis. While we hold space for all of us to be imperfect human beings, we believe that we can each do our part in making the world a better place while also further educating ourselves together. Members of the EJC will have many opportunities throughout the academic year to engage in climate action and respond to current environmental issues in meaningful ways such as through participating in local clean-ups, attending educational workshops, creating environmental justice-oriented art, practicing talking about climate change in facilitated group discussions, actively listening to the stories and perspectives of other club members and guest speakers, and connecting with climate change organizers and activists in the larger community.
