Volume 001
DMC Family!
We’re 5 weeks into the grind, and let’s be real - balancing classes, career prep, and trying to enjoy life is a full-time job. But you’re not doing it alone. DMC is here to plug you into opportunities, community, and a little motivation to keep your bag and your GPA secure.
This week, we’re focusing on resume glow-ups and internship prep. Whether you’ve got a blank Word doc or a 2-page draft, our workshop will help you walk away with something recruiters can’t ignore.

HYCU: How You Can Use
This week’s tool: “Impact > Job Title”
Most students think resumes should list what they were responsible for. Nah. Recruiters don’t care about responsibilities — they care about results.
Example:
“Responsible for stocking shelves at retail store.”
--->
“Organized inventory to improve shelf restock speed by 25%, ensuring smoother customer flow.”
See the difference? It shows impact, not just duties.
Action Step: Rewrite one bullet point on your resume tonight using this format:
What you did → how it helped → measurable result.

Sunday Spotlight
Each week we’re highlighting a DMC member who’s making moves.
This week: Mahmoud Koroma (Sophomore, Mechanical Engineering)
Mahmoud recently attended DMC's First General Body Meeting and LinkedIn & Headshot Workshop. When asked how DMC has effected him, he said:
“DMC has allowed me to network with likeminded indviduals.”
Moral of the story: showing up opens doors.

Community Service Spotlight
This week we’re highlighting a recent paper that reminds us how volunteering builds both community and career skills. The research shows that students who engage in service not only give back but also strengthen teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving — the same qualities recruiters look for.
We’re looking for volunteers! DMC will be partnering with local organizations this semester in the Hampton Roads area for community service opportunities. If you’re interested in lending a hand (and adding some powerful experience to your resume), email @esled002@odu.edu.
Question Bank
Real questions. Real answers.
Q: “What if my resume feels too basic? I don’t have big internships yet.”
A: Don’t sweat it. Employers don’t expect you to have 10 internships by sophomore year. They do expect you to:
-
Showcase transferable skills (teamwork, leadership, communication)
-
Highlight class projects, volunteer work, or part-time jobs with measurable results
-
Keep it simple, clean, and one page
Think of your resume as a story of growth, not perfection.
Rich Tip of the Week
Set a “3-1-1 Goal” this week:
By the end of the semester, those small reps will add up.
Final Word
Your future career isn’t just about grades or job apps - it’s about community. When you walk into Wednesday’s workshop, don’t just think about your resume. Think about who’s sitting next to you. That person could be your co-worker, reference, or even business partner in the future.
Show up. Network. Build. Repeat.
See you Wednesday,
